What to Wear for Beach Family Photos
Colors that look great on the beach
Sarasota's beaches give you white sand, turquoise water and a warm sunset sky, so pick colors that work with that backdrop instead of fighting it.
- Soft neutrals: white, cream, ivory, sand, oatmeal
- Coastal blues: dusty blue, chambray, light denim
- Warm accents: blush, terracotta, mustard, sage green
Choose a palette of 2–3 colors and let everyone mix and match within it. One person in a pattern or a stronger accent color adds interest.
What to avoid
- Big logos, graphic tees and text (they pull attention and date your photos)
- Neon and very saturated colors (they cast color onto skin)
- Tiny stripes and busy checks (they can flicker on camera)
- Everyone in identical white shirts and khakis. It's a classic, but coordinating beats matching.
- Brand-new shoes. You'll be barefoot anyway.
Fabrics and fit
Linen, cotton, chiffon and flowy dresses look beautiful in the Gulf breeze. Avoid stiff fabrics that wrinkle in the car. Long dresses and skirts photograph wonderfully at sunset. Make sure kids can sit, run and play in what they're wearing.
Tips by session type
Families and big groups
Dress the grandparents and parents first, then build the kids' outfits around them. With 10 or more people, give each household one color from the palette.
Maternity
A long, fitted or flowing dress in a solid color shows off the bump. White, blush, sage and dusty blue are favorites. Bring a second outfit if you like.
Couples and proposals
Coordinate tones so neither of you clashes. If it's a surprise proposal, find a reason for both of you to dress up a little: a "nice dinner" works every time.
What to bring
- A hairbrush and hair ties (it's windy on the Gulf)
- Wipes and a small towel for sandy hands and feet
- Water and a small snack for kids (save it for after)
- A change of clothes if the kids might end up in the water (they will)
- Leave sunglasses, hats and phones in the car or a bag

Frequently Asked Questions
What colors are best for beach family photos?
Soft neutrals (white, cream, sand), coastal blues (dusty blue, chambray) and warm accents (blush, terracotta, sage). Choose 2–3 and coordinate, don't match.
Should we all wear white for beach photos?
You can, but a mix of soft tones within one palette looks more modern and helps each person stand out.
Should we wear shoes on the beach?
No. Barefoot looks best on the sand. Wear sandals for the walk out and leave them in a bag.
Can you help us pick outfits?
Yes. Text me photos of your options after you book and I'll help you put the looks together.
